Notes from an Island by Tove Jansson, trans. by Thomas Teal
Notes from an Island by Tove Jansson, trans. by Thomas Teal
Here is a chronicle of the time Jansson and her partner, Tuulikki Pietilä, spent building a house on a remote island, Klovharun, in the Finnish archipelago in 1963. This book starts strong ("I love rock—sheer cliffs that drop straight into the ocean, unscaleble mountain peaks, pebbles in my pocket."), and charts a charming course through island life, perilous weather, eccentric characters, and the travails of building a house on a 1.5 acre rock in the middle of the sea.
Good condition, clean pages, small bump on top of spine. Beautiful endpapers from a map penned by Tove's mother, Signe Hammarsten Jansson. Paintings by Tuulikki Pietilä throughout.
